Is traditional therapy just not cutting it anymore?
You’ve done the work. You’ve learned the skills. But something is still holding you back.
You don’t have the time to devote to weekly therapy sessions
Let’s face it: you are probably juggling a billion other things for yourself and your family. Sometimes committing to weekly sessions is just too much. Life gets in the way and you find yourself canceling due to whatever weekly family crisis or added calendar event and your self-care gets back-burnered. It’s just too much to juggle, too often to take time away from work, or other responsibilities, or even to find a sitter to watch the kids.
You’re seeking deeper, more concentrated healing
You don’t want to draw out your healing process over months while we slowly uncover what your mind and heart need. You are a woman who likes to get things done! You would much prefer taking a half-day, full day or even two days to dig deep and finally really process things without the fear that a therapist is going to cut you off after 45-50 mins with “that’s all the time we have for today.” More concentrated treatment usually means a much more efficient process.
You’re in the right place.
Therapy intensives can help you accomplish in one session what may take months in traditional therapy.
What is an intensive?
Therapy Intensives are a longer format of therapy that allow the therapist and client to dig deeper and do more work in a condensed amount of time.
If you have been to traditional, weekly therapy before, you may remember how much time in a session may be spent on things like reviewing what all happened in the previous week, reviewing homework or challenges since the last session, checking in on where you are now, and then the process for wrapping up, reviewing and planning for the next session.
In a Therapy intensive those things take up such a small portion of the overall session. The bulk of the intensive session is done in the “working phase” of therapy- processing traumas, patterns, relationship issues and more. When we utilize EMDR or Brainspotting we get to process so much more in one session and the changes are often dramatic. Some have estimated that a 3 hour intensive may have an equivalent impact to 4-6 50 minute sessions! A full day intensive may be equivalent to months of traditional therapy!
Typically someone comes to an intensive with a particular goal in mind and that session is aimed entirely at that. We stay laser-focused and don’t get sidetracked by typical dramas of the week that can often distract in typical sessions and instead focus on achieving the goal- your healing on that particular issue.
Just a few of the Issues Addressed Well in Intensives
-
We know that the sooner a trauma is addressed, the faster it is healed. This means that if you have the opportunity to seek therapy soon after a trauma, it would be great to do so. The Intensive format allows us to dig deep and process more of the trauma at a faster pace, rather than dragging it out over months or years. Even if you have suffered with the effects of trauma for a long time, it has certainly be long enough!

Often birth is experienced as a trauma, and when this happens it can increase the risk of postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, attachment issues and many other concerns. As a perinatal mental health professional, I am additionally trained and certified to help mothers with their many challenges. Due to the unique nature of the postpartum period, I offer In Home Intensives to Clients in the Denver Metro Area (Travel Fee may Apply) This allows mama to remain close to baby in an environment that is comfortable to her while we work.
-
These can definitely be addressed in an intensive format! During an intensive, we might work on triggers, coping skills, create a wellness plan, and more to help you to function at your best.
-
I have called this Angry Mom Syndrome in my practice forever. It isn't a real syndrome but it is such a common thing in mothers. We can address this deeply and efficiently in the intensive format, so that you don't have to go weeks or months still blowing up and feeling guilty before you feel better.

Often one challenge that faces families is that there are drastically different beliefs and styles when it comes to parenting. Whether you are married or cohabitating with your partner, or if you are co-parenting apart, an intensive to work on getting on the same page can make a huge difference for both parents' sanity and the wellbeing of the children.
-
Are you aware that you have struggles with your own mother and they continue to impact you, your health and the way you parent your children? This is one type of mother-baggage that can easily weigh you down. If your mom would be willing to dig deep to improve your relationship with her, an intensive can be a great option. Whether she lives locally or is just going to be in town (both parties must be in Colorado), an intensive can help heal old wounds, improve current patterns and help you create a better relationship with your own mother.

Pre-Intensive Assessment
During our initial phone consultation, we will discuss if an Intensive might be the right fit for you. Depending on the circumstances, we may decide that a traditional one-hour session may be helpful before your intensive in order to do further assessment, share more background information or otherwise prep so that our intensive together is the most effective.

Intensive
Session
During your intensive we will start by making sure we are clear on the goals for the session, review the plan for the session and then spend the bulk of the session focused on those goals. This may include talk therapy, EMDR or Brainspotting, or other techniques appropriate to your case and your desired outcomes.

Post-Intensive Follow-Up
I will provide you with a summary of our session as well as any recommended tools or resources for the continuing of your healing journey. Some clients may continue to do traditional sessions with me, or another therapist, may choose to do further intensives, or may have met their goals and are ready to move on.

This is a great way to dig a lot deeper than you would in a 1 hour session.
This can be great for acute or recent issues, less complicated issues, or when you know you might benefit from several intensive sessions, spaced out to allow for personal processing in between.
Some clients may not feel like this is enough to really deal with their presenting struggles and may benefit from longer options, while others it will be perfect for. We can discuss this in your phone consult.

For One Day Intensives- we do two 3-hour sessions with a lunch break in between (lunch on your own.)
This format allows time for plenty of verbal processing, EMDR or Brainspotting, and Creating a personalized wellness plan. Or we can do all EMDR or Brainspotting or all talk...it's up to you! But with all day together, we can make HUGE progress!
This is a great option for those who want to not feel rushed and feel like they had plenty of time in the day to really get through a ton of work toward healing.

Both days will have Two 3-hour sessions with a lunch break in between.
Similar to the 1 Day- this amount of time really increases the amount of therapy that can be accomplished and progress that can be made.
This can be a great way to set aside time to really focus on you- take PTO, pass the parenting baton to your partner, invite grandma or trusted friend to hang with kids, maybe even stay in a hotel so you can have all the you time you need to devote to helping you be the best version of you.

I have heard this one several times. But definitely, yes there is! In fact, I have to work hard to keep to the 3 hour segments! I am always left wishing we had longer, so if you are trying to decide between two options for intensives, I recommend going for the longer option if possible, but we can always talk about that during our consultation.
-
While both formats are powerful ways to heal, intensives have some unique benefits.
Intensives tend to be very goal focused and targeted at meeting your deeper needs. We don't spend time each week having to catch up on the new drama that might be impacting you, but rather really dig into the core issue that you want to deal with.
Longer time means we can go deeper in the session. We have time to ease into the deep end and then ease our way back out, helping you to regulate yourself before having to re-enter your life.
Like all therapy I offer, each intensive is tailored to the needs of the client, I don't do a one-size-fits-all approach.
Because you are setting aside a large chunk of your time, energy and it is a bigger investment- you will come ready to work. You also don't have to jump right back into all of your other life responsibilities, like you might if you were doing weekly therapy sessions. You can plan ahead to allow for time for reflection and self-care to extend your healing experience even beyond your time with me.
-
We can talk about this in our consultation but here are some important things to consider:
Are you ready to dig deep, get uncomfortable, and do some real work?
Can you physically and emotionally handle doing therapy for long stretches?
How have you responded to therapy in the past?
How do you feel about the idea of doing an intensive?
Are you ok with the idea that while intensives can do more work faster, it still isn't a magic wand?
What are your specific goals for doing an intensive? How will you know if it is "worth it" for you in the end?
-
Some common issues clients want to address in this format with me are:
Trauma and Birth Trauma
Anxiety and Depression
Grief and Loss
Mom Rage
Parenting Together (for either parents in the same house or parenting apart)
Issues with your own mom- either to be dealt with on your own, or with your mother present.
Others- Let's chat if you have something you want to address in an intensive format.

During our phone consultation, we will discuss if your case might benefit from some preliminary individual therapy sessions to help you prepare. Some clients prefer this and others just want to dive straight into the intensive. Before your session, I will have paperwork to fill out online (required) and I may give you homework (optional but helpful).
I encourage all of my intensive clients to get clear about what their goals are for the intensive and what they want to make sure we do/address in the session. I also, encourage setting aside time before and after the session so you can mentally prepare yourself for the work you will do and then can process it afterward. It is best to not schedule this when you have to run right from work or kids in a frazzled state or return to your responsibilities quickly.
-
Schedule your free phone consult and we can talk about how an intensive may help you! After you schedule, I will be sending you a quick questionnaire so I am best prepped for our conversation.
